RCASG Parents Learn Valuable Information from Fire Safety Educator

Share

At the November support group meeting, parents and other group members were very fortunate to learn lots of safety tips from Jacade Long of Rockdale County Fire and Rescue.

First, remember the motto “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep”. Because your sense of smell is nearly nonexistent when you’re asleep, it’s critical to be awakened with an alarm when there’s a fire in your home. Smoke may not do the trick!

The fire department will come to your house to do an assessment and make sure you have detectors in enough locations – and that they are the right kind of smoke detector. Perhaps you need one that flashes a light or even shakes your bed? The fire department will even install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors for you (yours or theirs) and free of charge.

The fire department will help you create a home safety plan and check your home for hazards that could create obstacles for your family and for first responders during an emergency. They will also help you ensure you always have two ways out during an emergency.

Fireman Long advised parents to contact both the fire department and the police department to let them know if you have someone with special needs in your home. They will put the information in their database and can be prepared for any unusual situations when they arrive – saving precious time!

Finally, practice your escape plan with your family – over and over. Introduce your kids to firefighters and ask to see them in uniform to become familiar with the gear and alleviate fears.

This is a list of Rockdale County Fire Stations:

“Our firefighters welcome you to visit their stations to share a cup of coffee, tour the facilities, or let the kids check out the fire trucks. We would love to check your blood pressure and make sure you are staying heart healthy. Our fire stations are staffed 24hrs a day, 365 days a year, but sometimes when you stop by, no one may answer the door as they are out in the community responding to emergencies, conducting pre-fire planning, or catching up on fire service training.”
