The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History will host National Train Day for Autism, sponsored in part by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, on Saturday, May 9, 2015, from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

National Train Day for Autism is the only Metro Atlanta train event that that creates a sensory friendly experience for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families

The Museum will have various types of model train layouts, including a Thomas the Train layout and Little Lionel set, for children of different ages and needs to experience. These train sets are made possible by the Lionel Collectors Club of America (LCCA), a national, not-for-profit, volunteer organization.

Other features include a sensory friendly room with puzzles and activities and special showings of the Museum’s Great Locomotive Chase movie. Several fun and educational crafts will also be available for children to enjoy as well as an hourly interactive story-time beginning at 10:00 am. Staff and volunteers from Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, will be present to assist during the event and offer information and local resources for families.
